Congratulations to Xaviera Kelley, the 2009 John S. Whiting Scholarship Recipient.
When John S. Whiting, the former president of ETOX, passed away in October of 2007, ETOX wanted to carry on Mr. Whiting's strong belief in education. ETOX decided to create a scholarship fund in his memory for the children of ETOX employees, who want to continue their education after graduating high school. A scholarship committee was formed and ideas were discussed on ways to raise money towards the scholarship. A dunking booth at our company picnic was a good way to raise money, along with "getting back" at bosses! Another success in raising money for the scholarship fund is the sale of candy bars at all of ETOX's store locations. Each year we hope to raise more money for the scholarship fund, so the children of ETOX can benefit by continuing their education.
The committee also decided that the scholarship should not just be given away because an employee's child wants to continue their education, but they must earn it. It was decided that each graduating senior wishing to apply must first meet the minimum GPA to show they are committed to education. They must also fill out an application along with a 500 word essay about how the scholarship would help them meet their educational goals, attach a letter of reference, list the intended major or program of study, and list any clubs, volunteer service, awards, or honors to even be considered for the scholarship. So congratulations to this year's John S. Whiting Scholarship recipient, Xaviera Kelley.
